PHOTO ESSAY: EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA

On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake rocked a mountainous area of China's Sichuan Province. It was the worst natural disaster to hit the country in over 30 years. At latest count, over 60,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands injured.

The quake destroyed parts of cities as well as entire towns and villages, leaving many survivors trapped for days. Soldiers, fireman, policemen and ordinary citizens spent days trying to free people from the rubble and reach survivors in remote mountain villages. The Chinese government says approximately five million people were left homeless.
